About Sonja

Sonja grew up in the beautiful village of Norðragøta, where the mountains stand high around the village, but the bay is wide open and bright, welcoming you into the world. Sonja has accepted the open invitation that has brought her out into the world, but she has taken the heritage of the beautiful village with her.

It is clear that Sonja has lived close to nature and seen colours, moods, birds, and growth. But she has also lived in close relationship with other people—with family and friends in a small village, where the green and blue colors of nature have embraced her every day.

Sonja graduated as a teacher with a specialization in visual arts and the Faroese language. She has worked with children, igniting their interest in color, creation, and art. But her desire to do more with these interests herself has led her to paint full time.
Sonja, with her keen sense of observation, draws inspiration from nature and everyday moments. Whether it is children playing on the beach, a family working together in the fields, the feeling that wells up in a person, or a moment close to God; Sonja allows thoughts and observations to work in her and then finds a subject out of it. The words "Godliness with contentment is great gain" fit well into Sonja's outlook on life.

Sonja often starts her paintings abstractly, playing with colors and lines on the canvas before tightening up and bringing life to the subject to create a cohesive image. It is obvious that Sonja loves colours and uses them generously—especially the bright colours that can be seen in the rainy islands where she grew up.

Sonja works from the historic Ice House at Bakka in the village of Glyvrar—originally built by her husband Rógvi’s ancestors around 1900 to freeze bait fish using mountain ice and salt. Today, the stone house serves as her daily painting studio and occasionally transforms into an inspiring exhibition space, providing a fascinating and inspiring backdrop for Sonja’s captivating artwork.
